Heat program gets Regional Academies expansion

THE Regional Academies of Sport (RAS) have undertaken a new pathways program that will expand the work of the Northern Heat Development Program.

The North Coast Academy of Sport, Hunter Academy of Sport, Northern Inland Academy of Sport and Central Coast Academy of Sport are joining forces with the support of AFL NSW/ACT will introduce over the summer of 2025/26 a new pathways program designed to create more development opportunities and support the holistic growth of young athletes in our regions.

Whereas the Northern Heat program over the past two years has been for boys and girls in just the Undeer 17 age group, the new RAS program is for both boys and girls in the Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 age groups.

The following benefits will apply to those selected in the new program:

  • Face to face training sessions (kicking, handball, tackle technique and game play)
  • Athlete Education in topics such as nutrition, sports psychology, motivation, leadership and load management
  • Potential for Inter-Academy match play opportunity
  • On field and in gym Strength and Conditioning sessions (agility, running, coordination, strength)
  • Access to a network of specialised coaches
  • Access to recommended Academy providers such as physiotherapy and podiatry

This new program will prepare identified athletes for the annual Sydney Swans Academy Trials. All athletes involved in the program will be encouraged to trial each year or be working toward that level of performance.

Players who have been selected for this summer’s program have been notified after their talents were noted at the Northern NSW Championship played at Coffs Harbour in July.
