Magpies and Breakers playing for special prize
Cooper Sheldon, Max Morgan an Nate Sheldon with the Sheldon/Morgan Cup that Port Macquarie and the Coffs Harbour Breakers play for.
TWO great members of the AFL North Coast community will once again be remembered when Port Macquarie hosts the Coffs Harbour Breakers on Saturday.
The two clubs will once again play for the Sheldon/Morgan Cup in memory of Paul Sheldon and Peter Morgan.
Playing at Wayne Richards Park on Saturday will be their grandsons, Cooper and Nate Sheldon for the Magpies and Max Morgan for the Breakers.
This weekend the battle for the Cup will be especially poignant after the recent passing of Scott Morgan, Peter’s son and Max’s father.
The winner of the trophy is decided by which club wins the most of the four matches to be played on the day. A sign of who is stronger across the board. An apt way to decide the winner considering both Sheldon and Morgan were keen advocates on having a strong club overall, not just a strong men’s team.
The cup was created in 2011 in honour of Paul Sheldon and Peter Morgan, not only for the significant contributions to their respective clubs, but also Australian rules on the North Coast.
Sheldon was president of the Magpies for eight years and was a multiple-time winning coach in the reserves competition.
Off the field, Paul is a life member of the club and has the AFL North Coast’s Reserves’ Best & Fairest award is named in his honour.
Morgan was a former player of the Coffs Swans and coached the Swans last senior premiership in 1999. A grand final that gave him tremendous joy as his then teenaged son was part of the winning team.
The Swans meged with North Coffs in 2015 to form the Coffs Harbour Breakers.
