Dockers receive a funding boost

PLANS to extend the length of the ground at South West Rocks have been given a boost thanks to the application from the Dockers receiving conditional funding from the Australian Football Facilities Fund (AFFF).
The Dockers entered plans to extend the length of the ground from 120 metres to 135 metres by cutting into the hill at the northern end of the ground and erecting a retaining wall behind the goals.
The ground extension would see the club be able to host matches and training for older age groups when the club grows.
The club was told earlier this week when the successful applicants were informed that the AFL has pledged $50,000 (excl. GST) to the project on the condition that the project receives full financial backing by October 31.
The anticipated total project cost is $100,000.
South West Rocks Dockers president Mark Plummer is thrilled with the support the club is receiving from the AFFF.
“We’re just over the moon at the moment,” Mr Plummer said.
“This project combined with the brand new facility that’s been built at the ground will see the venue become an essential place for AFL between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour.
“This will be great for our community.”
Research conducted by LaTrobe University shows that for every $1 invested in a community football club, there is at least $4.40 returned in social value.
The experience of being associated with a football club drives greater social connectedness, wellbeing and improved physical and mental health all of which aligns with Government priorities.
Head of AFL NSW/ACT, Andrew Varasdi, shared his support for regional NSW Australian Football clubs.
“We’re committed to supporting regional footy communities by improving club facilities and helping grow the game through the Australian Football Facilities Fund,’’ Mr Varasdi said.
“Investments like these give clubs the chance to expand and get more people involved, with better flexibility for training and matches. The ground extension creates the opportunity for older age groups to play, empowering the local community to connect, and thrive.”
