Breakers win both Mens and Womens Premierships

Coffs Breakers celebrate winning the 2025 Senior Men's premiership.

THE Coffs Breakers are celebrating what turned out to be a very successful day at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium after winning both the AFL North Coast Senior Men’s and Women’s Grand Finals.

The Breakers overcame Sawtell/Toormina in both matches. The women started the day off on the right foot with a 22-point win.

The Saints held a one-point lead at quarter time but the Breakers kicked four goals to nil throughout the rest of the match to reverse the result from 12 months earlier.

The win meant the Coffs Breakers became the first team to win three AFL North Coast Women’s premierships.

Midfielder Nat Giri was her usual busy self in the midfield and was rewarded for her efforts being named as the best player on the ground.

The men were involved in an arm wrestle that lasted for the full four quarters.

Having led by 11-points at the main break, the Breakers went into the final term trailing by two points after Sawtell/Toormina vice-captain and Co-Brian Saville Medal winner Jai Langenberg kicked truly late in the third quarter to give the Saints the lead.

The Breakers regained the lead two minutes into the final stanza when Terrone Roberts-Potter kicked his fourth goal for the match but the Saints continued their strong form with two goals in two minutes to Darcy Brown to not just take his personal tally for the day to five majors but more importantly give Sawtell/Toormina an eight-point lead with 16 minutes remaining.

Coffs reduced the margin when the other Brian Saville Medal winner Alex Pyke kicked truly on the run from 50 metres to make it a two-point ball-game with nine and a half nailbiting minutes remaining.

Riley Dagger kicked his third goal when he picked up a goal square ground ball after a one-on-one marking contest and dribbled home the goal that regained the lead for the Breakers with just six minutes left in the match.

It was a desperate finish to the season but the Breakers withstood everything their local rival could throw at them to wash away the disappointment of grand final losses in both 2022 and 2024.

Langenberg was named as the Woodlock Medal winner for being the best player on the ground. Since the medal was first awarded in 2004, Langenberg became the first player from a losing team to be awarded the medal.
