Volunteer Hero of the week – Dylan Luke

In this weekly off-season feature we profile a club recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award to highlight the incredible work our volunteers do so that others can enjoy their footy.

This week’s Volunteer Hero is Dylan Luke from the Camden Haven Bombers where he is the retiring President.

What do you love about volunteering?

Volunteering to me is about enjoying seeing families from all clubs coming together and supporting our kids to play the game they love. Seeing them enjoy the sport and being there to help in any way possible is a great thrill.

What’s your favourite volunteering moment?

It was the day the kids at my club got to wear the Bombers jumpers and run out for the first time this year. The smiles on their faces were priceless. On that day we had one of our kids who got noticed by the Swans Academy coach in just his first year of footy. He loves learning from the coaches.

What skills has volunteering helped you to develop?

Being a naturally shy person it has made me a bit more confident and comfortable with talking with families and kids.

How does your club support new volunteers?

We try to make others who join the club feel valued. We try to support new volunteers when they need help and to learn from each other.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking about volunteering?

It’s great fun and all the help we get allows our kids to feel more comfortable and enjoy the game. We try not to overthink things but to work as a team.

In what areas will your club be looking for help in 2020?

2020 will see our club field teams again so we’ll be looking for new committee members and match day helpers. There will be a wide variety of jobs and we’ll help people find one that suits their experience, skills, and availability.

Our AGM is at Pilot Beach Reserve, Camden Head at 11:00am on Sunday 1 December and we would love to see everyone there.

What do you love most about your footy club?

Our club is a family club and we are always about supporting our kids and Auskickers. We actively encourage improvement in one’s self, no matter what level that person is at.

The Camden Haven Bombers can be contacted at chjuniorafl@gmail.com if you would like to volunteer or need info on any other aspect of the club.
