Good times at Superkick and Nines
THE introduction of Superkick and revival of AFL Nines on the Coffs Coast has proven to be a great success.
Coffs Coast Superkick is a new program that started this year and saw 24 kids aged from 7 to 12 engage in the program aimed to introduce some to AFL and for others to try something new and scrub up on their skills.
The participants learned some new games and drills to improve their kicking, handballing and general game awareness and then played some modified games of AFL.
During the last session of the program which was held last week, the kids played a game and then received their certificates and enjoyed some pizza and drinks to celebrate the success of the 2023 Superkick program.
The first season of AFL Nines on the Coffs Coast since before the pandemic saw nine teams compete across eight rounds.
After the round robin matches, teams were split into an A and B Grade based on their ladder position, to allowing for two grand final winners.
Following some close games in the semi finals, four teams were left fighting for the medals.
Iris Bleeds Teal played against Northern Beaches Mixed-fits in the A Grade Final while Knuckleheads faced Kickin ‘n’ Screaming in B Grade.
It was Iris Bleeds Teal and Kickin ‘n’ Screaming who took home the prizes.
Northern NSW Development Lead Matt Crawley said there was a lot of positive feedback from participants about the alternate, social style of the game.
“Almost 150 people participated in Superkick or AFL Nines and many of them said that they’ll be returning to play next year,” Crawley said.
“But for those who don’t want to wait that long to play, the Northern Beaches Blues will be hosting the program in February and March.”
More information on the upcoming programs will be available in the near future.
