Juniors on footy’s biggest stage

Bellingen and Sawtell/Toormina will meet in the Youth Girls 17s Grand Final aspart of a hugely of football at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium on Sunday.

THE culmination of the junior season will see five grand finals played on Sunday.

The teams earned the right to play on Sunday after coming through cut-throat semi finals last week.

Five clubs have teams playing in a marathon football at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium that will last for more than eight hours.

The day starts at 9.30am with a clash of the two Port Macquarie teams in the Under-11s.

The Port Flyers and Port Swoopers may be club mates off the field but Sunday will see no holds barred between the two as they both vie for premiership.

The Swoopers won both meetings between the two during the Home & Away season but the Flyers have hit their straps late in the season and enter the Grand Final on the back of a six-game winning streak.

The Youth Girls 14s clash between Bellingen and Coffs Breakers will see the Breakers try to cause a finals upset for a second straight week.

The Bulldogs have earned favourtism courtesy of a far superior win-loss record but the last time the Breakers faced Bellingen it was a closely fought affair with the Breakers coming back from 9-points down at half time to win by 10 points.

Nambucca Valley will play the first of its two Grand Finals for the day when the Under-13s face the Port Flyers.

The Lions have the edge in head-to-head meetings in 2022 winning both of the their matches against the Flyers.

The 13s combatants met twice in the space of 10 days thanks to a catch-up game being played at Wayne Richards Park on a Friday night. The first encounter saw the Lions prevail under lights by just 10 points while the next meeting was similarly close with Nambucca Valley winning by 15 points.

Bellingen and Sawtell/Toormina have built up a friendly rivalry over the years in the Youth Girls 17s.

The two were about to meet in last year’s Grand Final before Covid struck and they met each other in the 2020 decider which the Bulldogs won. Sunday will be the third year in a row the two have qualified to face each other in the premiership decider.

It should close one too. Their met four times in the space of eight weeks this year with the outcome being two wins apiece. To highlight how evenly matched the two teams are, the average scores in those four matches was Bellingen kicking 56 points a game and Sawtell/Toormina kicking 54.

Due to the start time of 4.10pm, the Under-15s grand final will see the second half played under lights.

Nambucca Valley’s 15s team has been one of the leading lights this season, winning more than 90% of its matches (just like the Port Swoopers in the 11s).
