“On this day in September” – 17 September

Our journey through the history of the month of September has reached the point where very few Grand Finals have been played on either today’s date, or on any of the upcoming dates. Never fear, we still have Best and Fairest medalists to celebrate, with two players from South Coffs/Coffs Swans making their mark on this date, plus a mystery that lives on after 33 years!

1983 SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT
The second year of the AFL North Coast competition, and John Timmons (South Coffs) is crowned the League Best and fairest, becoming the first player from the club to claim the honour.

1988 SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT
The only time in 40 seasons worth of AFL North Coast history that the Best and Fairest Medal wasn’t awarded! Can anyone shed light on why not?

1994 SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT
By this point in time the South Coffs club had re-branded to become Coffs Swans. Jeff Reed became the first player to win the League Best and Fairest under the Coffs Swans banner, and the third recipient in the Souths/Swans club’s history. Jeff would go on to claim the medal again the next season and become the second player to win back to back Best and Fairest Medals (after Brian Rava in 1991 and 1992).
