“On this day in September” – 5 September

As if hosting two Senior Grand Finals isn’t enough to earn 5 September a place in the history books of AFL North Coast, these were also significant events for the clubs involved.

  • Woolgoolga Blues won what was to be its ninth and last Senior Premiership (1998) before the club folded in 2005
  • North Coffs played in its last Senior Grand Final (2009) before merging with Coffs Swans in 2014 to become the Breakers
  • Nambucca Valley Lions won the Under 18 Grand Final (2009) before folding just two years later, only to be resurrected in 2020

1998 SENIOR GRAND FINALS
Woolgoolga Blues win their ninth Senior Premiership, a record that was to stand for a further 20 years.
Seniors: Woolgoolga Blues 15.11 (101) def Sawtell Toormina Saints 4.9 (33)
Reserves: Competition was in a one year recess so no 1998 Premier
Under 18: Competition resumes after a nine year break, Sawtell Toormina Saints claim the first title on resumption

2009 SENIOR GRAND FINALS
Sawtell Toormina Saints claim the second of three flags in a row, their fifth in history.
Seniors: Sawtell Toormina Saints 18.14 (122) def North Coffs Kangaroos 8.4 (52)
Jack Gillingham (Sawtell) claims the first of his back to back Woodlock Medals as B.O.G.
Reserves: Port Macquarie Magpies run continues, is now out to an incredible seven in a row
Under 18: Nambucca Valley Lions win their second Under 18 Premiership in five years.
