Classic encounters in Women’s competition go to the wire
The Women’s competition provided two outstanding matches that were both decided by less than a goal.
The top of the table clash between Coffs Harbour Breakers and Port Macquarie Magpies was a nail-biter that saw the Magpies claim a come from behind victory.
Port looked like they may have blown their chances early when Breakers held them goalless in the first term to claim a ten point lead at the first break. The Magpies fought back in the second stanza to reduce the deficit to four points, but history repeated itself in the third term as Breakers defended valiantly to not conceded a point whilst kicking one goal of their own.
This saw Breakers ten point lead reinstated by three quarter time. Port saved their best for last, producing a three goal final term to Breakers one goal, which saw them claim a narrow three point win in a top quality encounter.
Anishah Burnes was key to the Magpies scoring, booting four of the team’s five goals, with Eli Abi-Saab the other contributor.
Breakers scoring was evenly shared with Katika Adams, Takiah Pizzi, Laura Young, Bree Pinnell, and Tarryn Arnold each kicking one.
Port Macquarie Magpies 5.5 (35) defeated Coffs Harbour Breakers 5.2 (32)
The Northern Beaches/Grafton Women’s team is yet to taste victory in their inaugural season but they got within touching distance of recording the upset of the season against Sawtell Toormina Saints.
This match was an absolute arm wrestle with neither team able to have a decisive impact at any stage. Sawtell led early courtesy of a two goal to one opening term, then looked to be ready to ease away to victory when six behinds to no score in the second quarter saw them out by 12 points.
Both teams were so desperate in the third quarter that neither was able to score even a solitary point so the Saints held their twelve point advantage at the last break.
Northern Beaches/Grafton were able to once again hold Sawtell scoreless in the last term. Their own tally of one goal, two behinds was just short of what was required, leaving them four points adrift at the final siren. However they will take great heart from the performance and know that their first win isn’t far away if they can maintain this form.
Rachael Green kicked both goals for the Saints, while Britt Hargreaves and Deanna Paul had a goal each for the “Blue Tigers”.
Sawtell Toormina Saints 2.6 (18) defeated Northern Beaches/Grafton 2.2 (14)
