Grand Final Spots Up For Grabs
The first week of the AFLNC Seniors Finals takes place at C.ex International Stadium this Saturday, as the Qualifying Finals will showcase the top 2 teams in each grade, battling it out for the first spot in the Grand Final.
In the Seniors, it’s the local derby between the Sawtell-Toormina Saints and the Coffs Breakers. The Saints secured the Minor Premiership, but the Breakers have won the last two clashes between these sides, with an 11 point victory in Round 10, and recently a 26 point victory in Round 13, handing Sawtell their only two defeats this season.
Breakers’ Nicklaus Stanlan-Velt will be looking to add to his season goal tally of 65, which sees him comfortably on top of the goal kicking ladder, however, Sawtell’s experience in finals should give them the confidence that they can win the moments that count. One thing is for sure, and that’s whenever these two teams play each other, it is always a fierce contest.
In the Women’s, the race for the inaugural AFLNC Women’s Premiership heats up, as the Sawtell-Toormina Saints take on the Port Macquarie Magpies. These teams have fought out some great battles so far this season, including a draw, so this match shapes up to be another close encounter.
The Saints have found more options around goal than any other team this season, with Keira Basset, Alana Hanson and Kacee Uikelotu placed as the top 3 goalkickers during the home and away season. The Magpies girls have proven they can match it with their counterparts, and will be looking to cause an upset this Saturday.
In Reserve Grade, Port take on the Coffs Breakers for the second week running, following their 21 point win at home last week. The Magpies will go in as hot favourites, having finished well clear on top of the ladder, but the Breakers will take heart following their Round 12 victory over Port, which has been Port’s only loss of the season.
The first game of the day is the Under 17’s, with Minor Premiers, Port Macquarie, taking on the Coffs Breakers. Port continue to demonstrate their ability to develop strong juniors coming through, and deserve their favouritism in this match, but Coffs have star power of their own, and will be looking to showcase their talent in front of home fans.
