Georgia is All Australian!

After a series of stellar performances for the NSW ACT Youth Girls Team at the National Championships, Georgia Breward has been named in the NAB AFL Women’s Under-18 All Australian squad.

Georgia, who played all of her Junior footy for the Grafton Tigers before joining the strong Coolangatta Tweed Women’s outfit this season, has just completed her second year in the state team and is age eligible for selection again in 2018. Georgia was joined in the team this season by fellow Grafton Tiger Lilly Doyle who is eligible for a further two seasons.

The All Australian squad of 54 will be split in two and play a curtain-raiser to the NAB AFL Women’s State of Origin match to be played during the AFL ‘Celebration of Football’ between the end of round 23 and the first week of the AFL finals. An under-18 All Australian team will be named after the game.

Paul Taylor, AFL North Coast Football Operations Co-ordinator, acknowledged Georgia’s outstanding achievement. “Georgia and her family make a huge commitment, travelling to the Gold Coast and beyond several times per week for training and matches so this recognition is hard earned and thoroughly deserved. Whilst Georgia is still a year too young to nominate for the AFL Women’s draft, being a member of the All Australian squad will put her in the shop window for the AFLW clubs and they will definitely be marking her name down as one to watch over the coming year.”

“Georgia and Lilly are blazing a trail towards AFLW and inspiring many other young women in our region. With the introduction of the hugely successful North Coast Youth Girls competition this season, and with the rapid rise of Women’s AFL locally, we’re building a really strong pathway that will give any North Coast girl or woman the chance to pursue their AFL dreams.”

With three Women’s matches already staged involving a North Coast team, and further matches planned for July and September, the prospect of starting a Women’s competition in 2018 is extremely high. This includes the prospect of a Grafton Tigers Women’s team as well as the existing Youth Girls team so the call is going out to any girls or women with an interest in playing AFL.
