Volunteer Hero of the week – Felicity Myles

In this weekly off-season feature we profile a club recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award to highlight the incredible work our volunteers do so that others can enjoy their footy.

This week’s Volunteer Hero is Felicity Myles from the Sawtell Toormina Saints Seniors where she is the Secretary, Registrar, and Canteen Manager.

What do you love about volunteering?

All aspects really, it can be extremely rewarding. We have some truly amazing people both past and present within our club and it’s these people that make being a part of this club a great experience year in year out.

I love that we are continually developing new and exciting ideas and strategies as we are all striving towards the same goal, which is to make our club greater!

What’s your favourite volunteering moment?

I haven’t got one really, I have many. However,  recently I was very humbled to be recognised by my fellow committee and club members, not only for this award,  but for our own ‘Clubman of the Year’ award.

Whilst it’s a nice feeling for your efforts to be noticed, personally I don’t do it for the accolades or awards.

What skills has volunteering helped you to develop?

Confidence, a sense of belonging, and exceptional time management skills. Each year I see myself continue to develop both personally and as a part of the club. I look forward to seeing what’s in store over the coming years.

How does your club support new volunteers?

With open arms! We encourage everyone to be a part of our club. We understand with work and family commitments that not everyone has the time to take on a major role within the club and are happy for volunteers to do whatever they can, whether big or small, as every little bit helps and may lessen someone’s else’s load.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking about volunteering?

Do it! Get involved! It’s a great way to meet new people and make change. There is more to a sporting organisation than players, and volunteering can be extremely rewarding.

What areas will your club be looking for help in 2020?

We are hoping to get more volunteers to help on the committee in various roles including fundraising, sponsorship and grants applications as these are a vital part of any not for profit organisation. Getting someone to carry out these roles is crucial to the continued success of our club.

Game day helpers are another crucial part of the club to make sure our home games run efficiently.

Any help is always welcomed.

What do you love most about your footy club?

It’s more than a club, it’s family! When I moved to Sawtell, being new to the area, I didn’t know many people. This club has brought some truly amazing people into mine and my families lives and the bonds that have been formed will last a lifetime.

I love that we have diversity and camaraderie within our club, and each and every one of us continues to learn and grow with each passing year in many different ways.
