Breakers and Port Women surge towards Finals

Coffs Harbour Breakers continued to build towards the Finals with a win against Sawtell Toormina Saints, while Port Macquarie Magpies returned to winning form by beating Northern Beaches/Grafton.

The match between Breakers and Sawtell was incredibly even for three quarters but better discipline from the Coffs team in the third term allowed them to seal a decisive advantage. In the first, second, and fourth quarters neither team was able to outscore their opponent by any more than three points. Breakers played their best footy in the third to land three goals against Sawtell’s two behinds to take what would be a match winning advantage into the final term.

Katika Adams and Tarryn Arnold kicked two goals apiece for Breakers, with Takiah Pizzi adding one. Keira Basset kicked both of Sawtell’s majors for the match.

Coffs Harbour Breakers 5.9 (39) defeated Sawtell Toormina Saints 2.6 (18)

Port Macquarie steadied their ship after back to back losses by recording a comfortable ten goal win over Northern Beaches/Grafton.

Heading into this match the Magpies would have been nervous about their form with Finals just around the corner but they quickly dispelled those nerves to lead by four goals at half time. Port continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and were able to accelerate their scoring during this phase of the match.

Casey Miosge had a prolific day in front of goal for Port, kicking five goals. Four other players kicked one goal each but Port would have been most pleased with the way their defence stepped up and held Northern Beaches/Grafton goal less for the match.

The Blue Tigers have been valiant in their debut season but the wind appears to have gone out of their sails since it became evident that they wouldn’t be playing Finals footy in 2019. However, the team has made a positive mark on the competition this season, especially considering that it has given the other three teams 12 months headstart, and should be a force to be reckoned with next season.

Port Macquarie Magpies 9.8 (62) defeated Northern Beaches/Grafton 0.4 (4)
