Club footy is back front and centre

Normal service resumes this Saturday as the Senior Competition returns to action after a general bye across the long weekend.

The round is headlined by the local derby between Sawtell Toormina Saints and Coffs Harbour Breakers.

Saints will be hoping that the second half of the season brings a change of fortune after only having won two of seven matches to date in a faltering premiership defence. The loss of key players has been the main factor behind the poor run and the Saints know that they have to turn things around quickly if they want to feature in the biggest match at season’s end.

In the other changeroom, Breakers will be keen to get straight back into stride. The Coffs team has lost only once in 2019 and will be eager to hit top form quickly knowing that another clash with the competition’s other form team is just over a week away.

The other Senior match in the round sees Grafton Tigers hosting Port Macquarie Magpies at Centennial Oval, Woolgoolga.

The Tigers have endured a lean season to date which has impacted upon player commitment and numbers. The club has a great crop of youngsters who are starting to make their mark in the top grade but have a lack of experienced leaders to show the way. The team battles on commendably week after week but is craving a win that could draw players back into action.

Port are in the complete opposite position and find themselves in the midst of their best season in recent memory. The team has a common focus and is not being distracted by outside factors. The Magpies are a genuine premiership threat and will look to dispose of the Tigers with the ruthless efficiency that would be expected of a competition front runner.

A preview of the round 8 Women’s matches will appear online on Friday (14 June).
