Breakers Women create history while Port keep the pressure up

The balance of power in Women’s footy in the Coffs Harbour area might be about to shift as the Breakers recorded their first ever win over defending premiers the Sawtell Toormina Saints.

The Breakers win against their local rivals comes at the seventh attempt across two seasons and confirms their standing at the top of the 2019 ladder.

The Coffs team held a very handy 19 point lead at half time and looked to be well on their way to victory before a Sawtell fightback in the third term reduced the deficit to just five points. The Breakers were able to compose themselves at three quarter time and return to their game plan to post one goal to none in the final term and ease away to a 13 point victory.

Breakers Captain Katika Adams kicked three goals and Danielle Watson added one.

Sawtell were light on numbers going into the match, with several key players in Ahlani Eddy, Keira Basset, and Casey Uikelotu either carrying injuries into the match or sustaining one on the day. Despite playing with a foot injury Keira Basset booted both goals for the Saints.

Coffs Harbour Breakers 4.7 (31) defeated Sawtell Toormina Saints 2.6 (18)

The recent success of the Breakers Women has meant that the Port Macquarie Magpies have been flying under the radar the last couple of weeks. Their win against the Northern Beaches/Blues sees them move up into second place on the ladder and sets up a blockbuster in next week’s clash with the Breakers.

Considering the quality of their opponents, the joint venture “Blue Tigers” did an outstanding job to hold them to just two goals in the opening term and go to the first break trailing by 13 points.

The Magpies showed their class in the second term to boot five majors, but the “Blue Tigers” dug deep again in the third and kept the Magpies scoreless.

Goal kicking has been the Magpies achilles heel so far in 2019 but their fortunes improved in the final term after stern words from coach Mel Hunt and they were able to seal the match with three goals.

Anishah Burnes was the key forward target for the Magpies to boot three goals. Sahara Elfar and Casey Miosge each added two goals.

Port Macquarie Magpies 10.11 (71) defeated Northern Beaches/Grafton 0.3 (3)
