Grafton Women’s and Girls Come and Try

You watched the first rounds of AFLW, or you saw the Sydney Swans when they were in Grafton, and now you want to play Youth Girls or Women’s AFL. Then head on down to the Grafton Tigers’ Come n Try day on Thursday 15 February!

The Tigers are planning to field a team in this season’s AFL North Coast Women’s Competition and are running the Come and Try session to allow local ladies to try the game and learn some skills before committing to joining for the season. The session will be run by Female staff from AFL NSW/ACT and will start at 5:30pm before the Men’s training gets underway.

The session is open to any women or girls (13+) who are keen to give AFL a go. All ability and fitness levels will be catered for, with skills learnt in other sports making transition to footy really easy.

Alana Hanson, AFL Development Officer, said that the ladies will be hooked as soon as they try the sport. “From playing demonstration matches last season we now have teams created at Port Macquarie, Sawtell, and Coffs Harbour. Only a couple of the ladies had played previously so the vast majority are all still learning as they go.

“We’re all loving the challenge of learning new skills, the physicality of the game, and building our fitness. Training has been great fun and the men within the clubs have been so welcoming and accommodating. Most women have come from another sport background and are loving the environment.”

AFLW has seen Women’s footy explode into the public consciousness and has made a major contribution towards it becoming the fastest growing sport for Women in the country.

The Come and Try will be at Ellem Oval, Prince Street, Grafton from 5:30pm on Thursday 15 February. Anyone interested should bring their friends, meet at the ground wearing runners and exercise clothing, and be prepared to have a great time!
